This tool helps you use evidence to make decisions about a new or existing practice or program (referred to from here on as ‘practice’) based on Â鶹Éç’s Standards of Evidence.

This tool will help you consider the evidence supporting a practice. However, it’s not a set of rigid rules. Sometimes it won’t be clear which category your evidence belongs to, so you’ll still need to use your professional judgment.

You may find Â鶹Éç’s explanations of key research concepts helpful in understanding technical terms used in this tool.

How to use this tool

You can use this tool for:

  • personal professional learning to assess the evidence behind a particular practice and decide on next steps
  • professional learning in a group – such as a community of practice – to critically reflect on a practice as a team.
  1. Start by selecting a practice you’re interested in using and collect whatever evidence you can about it. The rest is easy.
  2. Select â€˜Start using the tool’. You’ll be prompted to answer questions until you reach the end.
  3. The tool will take you through 2 sections:
    1. Assess your level of confidence in the practice
    2. Decide what to do next based on your level of confidence.
  4. You’ll have the opportunity to download a reflection sheet at the end to help you plan your next steps. Fill in and keep the completed reflection sheet as a record of your decision-making about a particular practice.
  5. Revisit the completed reflection sheet and reassess your confidence level as often as you need to when making evidence-based decisions.
